The Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology is the oldest at the university, having been organized since the founding of the Kazakh State University in 1934. Currently, in accordance with ongoing scientific research and modern educational programs for training specialists, the faculty is called the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology. Today it is a large innovative scientific and educational center, where in 2 research institutes: problems of biology and biotechnology and problems of ecology, fundamental and applied research is conducted in many areas of modern biology, ecology, biotechnology, biomedicine, in which both teachers and students participate . The faculty consists of 4 departments: - biodiversity and bioresources, - biotechnology, - molecular biology and genetics, - biophysics, biomedicine and neuroscience, as well as a bioclinic and agrobiological station. An important division of the faculty is the Biological Museum, the funds of which store more than 5 thousand specimens of stuffed mass, endemic and rare species, which are unique objects of research. Currently, 2,500 students, undergraduates and PhD doctoral students are studying at the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology. A highly qualified teaching staff participates in the training of biologists, biotechnologists, geobotanists and fish farmers. Master's and PhD students undergo internships at leading universities and research centers around the world. Prominent scientists and leading specialists from the institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as employers, also take part in training students. During its existence, the faculty has trained more than 13 thousand specialists in a wide variety of branches of biological science who work in research institutions, in various industries, in the system of higher and secondary education of our Republic, as well as in universities and research centers near and far abroad: Harvard , Texas, University of Virginia in the USA, universities in France, Canada, Great Britain, Germany, Russia. Among the graduates of the Faculty of Biology there are government and public figures, as well as business representatives who are employers of current graduates and actively participate in the development of educational programs, continuous practical training of students, and provide practice bases. Every year, 100% employment of graduates of our faculty is noted. Faculty teachers, thanks to active international cooperation with leading research centers and universities around the world, create real opportunities for academic mobility of students. Students can study at foreign universities for 1-2 semesters and, as a result of successful completion of the training program, receive a double diploma: KazNU and a foreign university. All teachers and students of the faculty are constantly improving their knowledge of foreign languages; study groups have been created in English in all specialties. Every year, more than 30 scientists from leading foreign universities give lectures and conduct master classes on modern areas of biology and biotechnology at the faculty.
